As the original joint program, negotiated with the first bargaining agreement in 1941, the UAW-Ford Joint Apprenticeship Program supports the training and maintenance of the skilled-trades workforce. The National Joint Apprenticeship Committee (N.J.A.C.) directs the program, ensures standards, and monitors apprentice graduation. Local Joint Subcommittees monitor the progress of the apprentices in their respective locations. And to keep apprentices up to date with rapidly changing technology, the Huron Technical Training Center opened in 1995 to house the N.J.A.C. and provide state-of-the-art facilities for apprentice training. Approximately 25,000 have graduated into the skilled trades (as of 2000). J.A.C. programs also include Distance Learning, Core Skills Training, and In-Course Progress Assessment.

The Huron Technical Training Center (H.T.T.C.), located in the Metropolitan Detroit area, provides the UAW-Ford Joint Apprenticeship Program with the facilities and equipment to meet its growing needs. Since 1994, the H.T.T.C. has been the home for the union and company representatives of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee. At 98,000 square feet, the H.T.T.C. has 13 classrooms, 12 labs, a 24,000-square-foot Shop Area, administrative offices, a cafeteria, and a whole host of machinery and equipment. At the H.T.T.C., all apprentices attend a three-week Core Skills Training Program, developed in 1991. In the classroom, apprentices learn safety practices and theory. In the lab, they survey job tasks. And in the Shop Area, they perform job tasks under the guidance of skilled-trade instructors.

Information on the following pages will be helpful to that Apprentices at our plant. They include the full curriculum for each college offered. In the future you will see a forum allowing our apprentices to trade books and ideas over our web.
